LOCAL REQUIREMENTS

In 1987 there were 3020 births in the Bethlehem district and 8075 births in the Hehron district. ( 11 095 )

Inspite of the fact that Hebron hopes to have a 40 bed maternity in 1991, we believe that part of the concerned population will continue to come to the Holy Family Hospital.

In 1991, the number of deliveries at the Holy FamilyHospital will approximate 2 500 p.a. A figure which can be taken care of by the staff we have studied in II 4, and which requires an estimated 24 beds . This statistic has compelled us to lookat the hypothesis of increasing our beds in obstetrics as we have 28 beds now, we feel we can cover the existing need.

Another need is seriously felt in gynecology in 2 areas:

The gynecology patients in need of operations and hospitalisation.

The so called external gynecology, with patients in need of one day observation at the hospital for treatment.

The doctors treating sterility are rare in the region and nobody practices microsurgery.

Paradoxally, if a family planning service is imperative to help the mothers with 10 to 25 children to learn to regulate the births, sterility poses another sort of social and religious problem and merits being taken into consideration.

10 beds would be necessary for these needs This will increase the total of number of beds to 34.

Also the experience of the first months of operationpermits us to appreciate certain requirements. like the lack of one Ceded rooms, necessary for the isolation of contageous mothers ( 6 Australia Antigen positive cases diagnosed in 118 deliveries )

The small space of the nursery and the incubators room does not permit several members of the staff to work there at the same time

These different points permit us to contemplate an extension project and the creation of 6 single bed rooms, a new nursery, another operating room and 2 more delivery rooms
